Helens father, Captain Arthur Keller, was a newspaper editor and a cotton plant farmer. During the Civil War he served in the Confederate Army. Her mother, Kate Keller, was born in the south, and she was related to John Adams. Helen loved her parents and had a great relationship with two of them. When Helen was nineteen months old she came down with a serious fever. The doctors called it congestion o f the principal and stomach. Suddenly, the fever went away and she became blind. Helen was having a bath when her mother apparent motiond her pass off in front of her face and she did not blink or move her eyes at all. She did it several times to see if she would blink alone she never did. Helens mother realized that her daughter had become blind. Helens mommy and dad noticed that she needed a little special help, so they decided it would be best to contact the Perkins Institute for the blind in Boston. The director told them about Anne Sullivan. She had also been blind, but the doctor saved her seeing in surgery. When Helen was in her eighties she became very weak. In 1961, she had a stroke and certain diabetes. At the age of 87, Helen died while she was in her house after having a sudden heart attack.
